Mare & Colt Pillowcases

These embroidered pillowcase are available from the Jack Dempsey company.  The name of the product is "Mare & Colt."  The pillowcases come pre-stamped with the design and a list of thread colors and quantities to complete the embroidery.

The lace that I added is comprised of a filet crochet horseshoe design that I created myself, and an edging design available for free by clicking here.

Pansy Delight Pillowcases

These embroidered pillowcase were produced by WonderArt, which may be a Bucilla Company.  The pillowcases are "Pansy Delight Art. #1219."   The pillowcases come pre-stamped with the design and a list of thread colors and quantities to complete the embroidery.  I don't know if these pillowcases are still being produced.

I added two laces to these pillowcases.  The upper lace next to the embroidered pansy design is a free pattern available from Celtwich (click here).  The change that I made to this lace was to elimitate the first row of filet,  and then add a double crochet heading to the edge nearest the embroidery.  Then I added a blue satin ribbon to match the blue ribbon in the embroidery.  In other words, this is a crochet-as-you-go lace, so I simply eliminated the first filet on each motif which made the lace narrower.

The second lace at the edge of the pillow cases is a version of the "Loop and Bar" lace pattern available for free from About.com (click here).

However, when I first downloaded the lace pattern, the picture was backwards as you can see (click here).

For this second lace I did not add a blue satin ribbon, and only added a double crochet header to make it look more finished.

Estas fundas las compré de la empresa "WonderArt" que posiblemente es una empresa que pertenece a la empresa "Bucilla."  Las fundas se llaman "Pansy Delight Art.#1219."  Las fundas vienen con el dibujo listo para bordar y con una lista de hilos y colores.  No sé si las fundas todavia se están produciendo.

Puse dos encajes en las fundas.  El encaje que está más cerca del bordado de flores de pensamiento está disponible gratis en la página de Celtwich (haz clic aquí).  El cambio que hice a este encaje fue elimnar el primer cuadro abierto y luego tejer un encabezamiento de punto alto en la orilla más cerca del bordado.  Luego puse un listón de satín del color azul para reflejar el listón bordado en el diseño.  En otras palabras, el encaje se teje motivo-por-motivo y simplemente hice el encaje mas estrecho.

El segundo encaje está a la orilla de las fundas y es una versión del encaje "Loop and Bart" disponible gratis de About.com (haz clic aquí).

Sin embargo, la primera vez que bajé las instrucciones, la photo parecía estar al revezado como se ve  (haz clic aquí).

Para este segundo encaje no puse el listón de color azul, y solamente tejí un encabezamiento de punto alto para que se mirara mejor el encaje.

Long Stem Rose Pillowcases

These embroidered pillowcase are available from the Jack Dempsey company.  The name of the product is "Long Stem Rose."  The pillowcases come pre-stamped with the design and a list of thread colors and quantities to complete the embroidery.

The lace that I added is Filet Edging S-763, which was originally published in "Priscilla Filet Crochet Coats & Clark's Filet Crochet Book No. 317 1955."  I added a white satin ribbon to the top of the lace because I thought it looked nicer.  When I made these pillowcases, I found the edging pattern for free on the website of vintage crochet patterns by Celtwich.  However, she has removed many of those patterns due to others' downloading them and selling them on the Internet.  Currently there are copies of the booklet and edging pattern avaialable on Etsy and other sites.

Square Potholder by Elizabeth White

This is the front and back of a square potholder that I made from the set of patterns "Pretty Potholders" by Elizabeth White.  I first found these patterns in "Annie's Crochet Newsletter Nov.-Dec. 1991," and have seen the patterns for sale from time to time on eBay.

I haven't worked the other two patterns in the set just yet, because the pattern for the square potholder has some problems.  It doesn't lay flat, even when the front is not connected to the back, and it pulls diagonally which is even evident in the picture in the magazine.  When hanging, it pulls out of shape.  I first noticed some distortion of this potholder in the magazine picture, and assumed that it might just be distortion in the photograph, but apparently it is the pattern itself.  I have made many other square potholders very similar in style, and they do lay flat.  A second problem is that the front doesn't fit the back very well.  While I like the design and color placement of the back, the front tends to fold over on itself at the point where it attaches to the back, especially at the center point of each side.

At some point I would like to re-work this pattern to have something that lays flat and does not pull itself out of square.  To do that I will probably compare the pattern to patterns of similar potholders that I know do not twist and pull.

I do like the white shells around the edge, and the red border.

Este es la frente y la espalda de una agarradera de ollas que hice del juego de instrucciones llamados "Pretty Potholders" por Elizabeth White.  Encontré las instrucciones en la revista "Annie's Crochet Newsletter Nov.-Dec. 1991," y las he visto en venta de vez en cuando en eBay.

No he tejido las otras dos agarraderas en este juego porque las instrucciones para la agarradera cuadrada parecen tener algunos problemas.  La agarradera cuadrada no mantiene su forma cuadrada, o sea, se levanta en diferentes partes en vez de quedarse plano cuando está en la mesa, y tampoco mantiene su forma cuadrada cuando está colgado.  La frente se queda distorcionado antes de pegarla a la espalda, y luego al pegarla con la espalda, hay más problemas todavía.  He hecho varias otras agarraderas de este mismo estilo, y nunca tuve este tipo de problemas con distorción.  Y otro problema es que la frente no se ajusta correctamente con la espalda.  La frente se dobla en la orilla cerca de donde está atada a la espalda, y eso tiende a ocurrir en medio de cada lado, y no parece occurrir en las esquinas.

Un día quisiera volver a trabajar con esta agarradera y corregir estos problemas, para así tener algo que se queda plano en la mesa o que se queda plano estando colgado.  Para hacer este trabajo probablemente tendré que comparar las instrucciones para las agarraderas de este tipo que no han tenido este tipo de problemas de distorcionarse.

Lo que sí me gusta de esta agarradera es la orilla de conchas, y el rojo que forma un bonito marco para el diseño.

Hot Pepper Hot Pad

This is a hot pad crocheted with worsted weight cotton yarn and a size H crochet hook.  The pattern was distributed as a free pattern in 2007 by Annie's Attic.  Click here to find a free copy of the pattern.

Rosy Pot Holders

These pot holders are crocheted with cotton worsted-weight yarn and a size H crochet hook.  The pattern is called "Rosy Pot Holders" and was published in "Vanna's Afghan and Crochet Favorites" (Oxmoor House, Inc. 1997) and also published in "The Best of Leisure Arts" (date unknown) under the title "Rose Petal Pot Holders."  The pattern can be frequently found for sale on eBay and on Etsy.

Irish Roses Crochet Heart Doily

This little heart doily appears on the original pattern in all pink.  The original pattern is for a sachet, however, I thought that the design needed some color, and saw it as a little doily.  I made several to give away, and the recipients seemed to like that they were small and could be placed in small areas.

Esta pequeña carpeta de corazón aparece en las instrucciones originales en un solo color--el color de rosa.  Las instrucciones originales son para una bolsa para hacer una bolsita para guardar hierbas secas, como la lavanda, pero yo sentí que el diseño necesitaba más color, y que se veía bien como una pequeña carpeta.  Hice varias carpetas para regalar y los recipientes me dijeron que les gustaron la medida pequeña para asi ponerla en lugares de poco espacio.

Pink and Blue Pansies Doily

Here is a pansy doily that I made with pink and blue flowers.  I wanted to experiment with the pink and blue color combination, and am enjoying the result.  For the free pattern, click here.

Violet Flower Doily

I made this sweet Violet Flower Doily several times with different sizes of thread.  The free pattern (click here) indicates size 40 thread, which is very small, however I made the larger size in size 10 thread and it turned out very well.  That doily went to Mexico as a gift to my sister-in-law, and she loved it.  I then made the same larger size in size 30 thread, which is the one pictured here.  The lovely purple color thread is Manuela which is no longer imported to the United States.  I also made the smaller size in both size 10 and 20 thread, both of which were given as gifts and well received. 

Tejí esta carpeta llama "Flores de Violeta" varias veces con differente número de hilo.  Las instrucciones son gratis (haz click aquí) y indican el uso de hilo número 40, lo cual es muy fino, pero sin embargo tejí la carpeta mas grande con hilo número 10 y salió muy bonito.  Esa carpeta la mandé a México a mi cuñada, y ella estaba muy contenta al recibirla.  Tejí también la carpeta mas grande en hilo número 30, la cual es la carpeta de la foto.  El hilo que usé para las flores es de la marca Manuela la cual ya no se está importando a los eeuu.  Luego tejí la carpeta mas pequeña en hilo número 10 y 20, las dos regaladas a amigas que las recibieron con mucho gusto.

Roses Heart Doily

This doily design was originally made in only white thread, and I thought it would look better with some color added.  The variegated green is a thread that is no longer made.  The pattern is available in Annie's Attic Leaflet 870615 Heart Doily Delights.  The doily appears on the front page on the lower right corner in all white.

Las instucciones originales para esta carpeta indicaron el uso de hilo blanco solamente, y yo pensé que se miraría mejor con colores.  El verde matizado es un color que ya no se vende.  Las instrucciones se encuentran en el folleto de Annie's Attic 870615 Heart Doily Delights, y la carpeta aparece en color blanco en la primera página en la esquina derecha en la parte de abajo.

This is a pansy heart doily that I made some time ago.  I liked that the pansies did not completely encircle the heart.  The pattern is somewhere in storage and as soon as I find it, I will edit this post to include it.

Sheep Measuring Tape

This is the little tape measure that I use when I am working on needlework or blocking.  The tape lives in the sheep's tummy and is accessed by pulling the sheep's tail.  To return the tape, just press on the sheep's tummy.   The tape measure is made by a company named Moon Lantern.  This one was purchased in a craft store, but they are also available here.

Este es la cinta que uso cuando estoy tejiendo o haciendo la cuadratura de un tejido.  Las cinta vivec en el estómago del borrego y se sale al jalar la colita del borrego.  Para devolver la cinta, apreta la barriga del borrega.  La cinta está hecho por una empresa que se llama Moon Lantern.  Yo compré esta cinta en una tienda de tejidos, pero también está disponible aquí.

Blocking Board

This is the board that I use to block my doilies.  It is made of a printed canvas placed over some batting and attached to a board so that I can attach the doilies with pins when they are damp, or to attach and then steam them.  This board was purchased, but one can easily be made by purchasing canvas and marking it with permanent ink and then adding padding to it and stretching it over a wood panel.

Esta es la tabla que uso para la cuadratura de mis tejidos.  Está hecho de caneva marcada y atado a la tabla sobre algodón para asi atar a los tejidos con alfileres cuando están húmedas o para hecharles vapor.  Esta tabla la compré pero es fácil para hacer.  Se puede comprar la caneva y marcarla con tinta permanente y luego atarla a la tabla sobre un pedazo de algodón.

Ocean Pansies Doily

This is a little Ocean Pansy doily that I made using Aunt Lydia's Crochet Thread size 10 in the color Ocean.  I made this from a pattern found in the May, 1951, issue of Workbasket Magazine (page 4), however, any pansy doily pattern will work.

Este es una pequeña carpeta con flores de pensamiento.  La carpeta está tejida con hilo no. 10 de marca Aunt Lydia, en el color Ocean.  Encontré las instrucciones en Workbasket Magazine May 1951, página 4, pero creo que cualquier carpeta teniendo flores de pensamiento se puede usar.

Hello Kitty! Hot Pad

This is a hot pad to use with pots, platters or hot casserole dishes on the table, made in the likeness of "Hello Kitty" that I made as a gift for a friend.  I searched the Internet for patterns of different types, and then used a compilation to make this hot pad.  The hot pad is two layers, with the facial details on the front layer only.

Este es una almohadilla para usar con ollas, platos, o casuelas calientes en la mesa, hecho en el estilo "Hello Kitty."  La hice como regalo para una amiga.  Busqué en el Internet diferentes instrucciones para diferentes tejidos, y luego al estudiar esas instrucciones hice esta almohadilla.  La almoadilla está compuesta de dos capas, con los detalles de la cara solamente en la primera capa.

Another Monkey Lace Motif

In working on the Monkey Lace, a friend sent me some information about a pattern for a "wagon wheel" doily made of motifs very similar to the monkey lace motif.  Here is a picture of the motif from that pattern.  Click here to see a picture of the pattern that is for sale.

Monkey Lace

Monkey Lace is, as far as I’ve researched, a lace composed of separately made motifs. The motifs have curved blades that have picot stitches on their outer edge. Here is a link to a picture of Monkey Lace in a doily from the 1950’s. It appears in a Coat’s & Clark’s Book No. 111. After clicking the link, scroll down to the information about the booklet, and then at the bottom of the picture of the booklet, click the fourth picture to see a doily made from Monkey Lace. The doily in that picture is made with size 30 thread, and a size 10 crochet hook. Here is a picture of the Monkey Lace motif from that doily pattern, made with size 10 thread and a size 7 Boye crochet hook:

A few months ago in a search for crochet lace, I found a link to a picture of yellow lace.  I was not able, however, to find a source for the pattern until several weeks later when I found this link to both the picture and the graph (scroll down to just over half way down the page).  I struggled with the graph and eventually found this tutorial by Tammy, which helped me to understand how the lace was executed.

Hace unos meses al buscar encaje tejida, encontré un enlace hacía una foto de encaje amarilla.  Pero no pude encontrar las instrucciones hasta varias semanas después cuando encontré este enlace hacía la foto tanto como el gráfico (busque mas abajo a partir de la mitad de la página).  Batallé con el gráfico y eventualmente encontré este tutoría por Tammy, la cual me ayudó a saber como se teje el encaje.

 

My lace differs somewhat from Tammy’s in that my first motif has only 5 blades, whereas hers has 6 blades.  As well, the way I attached each motif to the previous one is slightly different.  I also added a single crochet header to the edge of the lace where it is attached. The lace is attached to a tea towel that features a picture of lemon pie.  The tea towel is available from marylakethompson.com.

To make the lace I used size 10 yellow thread and a size 7 Boye crochet hook.
